Thousands of protesters are expected tonight on the streets of central Sofia and 15 other Bulgarian cities, objecting to corruption and the illegal decision to permit a ski resort and commercial logging in Pirin National Park. It coincides with a visit of all EU Commissioners and the opening ceremony of the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU in Sofia.

One in four mammals and one in eight birds are now threatened with extinction, as forests and other irreplaceable habitats are degraded and destroyed. Three species become extinct every hour.

Friends of the Earth Europe campaigns to end this alarming decline in species worldwide. Biodiversity forms the basis of existence for future generations. We aim to put this message at the heart of ongoing European debates, and support our national and local groups to preserve biodiversity on the ground.
